A
story of travels, exiles and intertwined destinies.
A musical
journey that tears through the first half of the 20th century, from
the Berlin years to Broadway.
Fringe favourite,
world-class kabaret singer-actor Anna Zapparoli, child co-star
Beniaminoand a
dazzling 4 piece
jazz band perform songs by Wedekind (one of them set to music
for the occasion
by musical director Mario Borciani), Eisler, Weill,
not only to lyrics by Brecht but also by Ira Gershwin.
There are some amusing songs by Hollaender (the composer of
the Blue Angel and other Marlene
Dietrich songs); and last but not least, the songs the protagonists
of this radiant creative era wrote
once they crossed the Ocean, hounded out of Germany by Hitler's folly.
This cavalcade
- in 4 languages - depicts a Germany which, without abandoning its
ethnic values,
found a way to welcome the most colourful influences of music from
all over the world.
Zapparoli
moves effortlessly to portray the wide array of characters - from
street vendor to glamorous
chanteuse - and her rich contralto voice gives new life to these already
vibrant songs.
La Dual
Band is very much a family affair. Founded in 1997 by husband
and wife team Anna Zapparoli
and Mario Borciani, it specialises in creating, producing and staging
chamber musicals. 13 year old
Beniamino is a highly accomplished singer and is clearly following
in the family tradition. The company
is based in Milan but works regularly both in Italy (in Italian) and
in the UK (in English). La Dual Band has
performed in Edinburgh, London, Milan, Rome, Florence, Trieste and
has just completed a successful
run at the Avignon Festival.
One
of the most arresting performances I've witnessed in 15 years of Fringe
