Black Lives Matter – Scottish Mural Trail

19 July 2020

Giant new artwork – Justice for Sheku Bayoh – at Edinburgh’s Usher Hall joins the rapidly expanding Mural Trail as Scotland’s artists and arts organisations combine their voices to support Black Lives Matter.

Scotland’s Black Lives Matter Mural Trail is expanding rapidly. The addition this week of 5 new artworks at Edinburgh’s Usher Hall takes the total to 24 (across Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness) with over a dozen more planned in the coming weeks, in Stirling and Dundee, as well as Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The latest additions are by Kirkcaldy artist Abigail Mills aka Abz (picture below with Sheku Bayoh’s sister) including an impressive 5.5 metre x 6.5 metre print on the Usher Hall’s Glass Wing, and a further 4 images next to Lothian Road. Striking, colourful and thought provoking, Abz’s work reflects her regular job as a tattoo artist, but goes far beyond that, reflecting her Scottish/Jamaican heritage and self identifcation as a “queer artist”.

The Glass Wing artwork – Justice for Sheku Bayoh – is inspired by the death in 2015, in police custody in Kirkcaldy, of Sheku Bayoh (now the subject of a recently announced public enquiry).

New Releases by Dean Owens, BA Robertson

19 June 2020

Looking forward to a couple of exciting new single releases coming in July.

Fri 3rd July 2020
Dean Owens, with a new song, To Where The Heart Is (recorded with his Whisky Hearts band (Amy Geddes, Brian McAlpine, Craig Ross, Jim McDermott and Mike McCann), at Slate Room Studios, Pencaitland). It’s a big widescreen of a song, thinking of people you grew up with and the different journeys they take. The accompanying video (by Ruth Barrie of Waltzer Films) was shot mostly on Super 8 film, around Joshua Tree National Park, California.

(Premiered on Americana UK )

Fri 10th July 2020
BA Robertson with his version of his own much loved, award winning song, The Living Years. This is all about the vocal, and is quite stunning. A powerful pop ballad about fathers and sons, it already has a place on many people’s favourite song lists, and BA’s version (which he claims to have found “behind the sofa”) delivers all the emotions in spades.

COVID-19 impact

10 April 2020

Sadly, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, all live tours and performances are cancelled/postponed throughout 2020. Hopefully they will be able to restart in 2021. Meanwhile, I am working with my clients to develop alternative, safe and innovative ways to get their work out in the world, including continuing to release new music and art, online performances etc.

This is such a difficult time for everyone, but especially for the whole professional creative ecosystem, where we are all interconnected – artists, venues, promoters, agents, tour managers and FOH staff, not to mention the printers (and all the people who put up the posters), press, photographers, record labels… the list is enormous. And of course, the audiences too.

Please take care, be kind to each other, stay safe, and hopefully we can all meet again on the other side.

On Sale Now – Christine Bovill’s PARIS, Queen’s Hall

8 January 2018

Tickets are now on sale for Christine Bovill’s highly acclaimed PARIS show, at the Queen’s Hall, Thu 31 May 2018.
A 5 star hit at 2016 and 2017 Edinburgh Fringe, including winning Spirit of the Fringe Award 2017, Paris has also wowed international audiences including London, Ireland and Berlin.

Be transported into a Parisian scented twilight world of song, as Christine beckons you back to the Golden Age of French Song; a demi-monde of heroes and outcasts, cynics and bruised romantics. No gimmicks. No pretence. Nothing but a voice – smoky, evocative and emotive – singing of life’s triumphs and tragedies. With drama, pathos and pizzazz, the show casts a sepia-tinged spotlight on the songs and stories of Jacques Brel, Edith Piaf, Barbara, Juliet Greco, Charles Aznavour and more…

Dean: “The Last Song is the first song Will Kimbrough and I wrote together for the album. We bonded through our mutual love of Ronnie Lane and bands like The Waterboys. We wanted to write a kinda pub rock song for the end of the night and we just sat jamming and throwing in names of some of our heroes. It’s also got lots of great Kimbrough guitar licks on it“.
