Samba Sene was born in Senegal but moved to Scotland 7 years ago. His style is strongly influenced by the jazzy grooves of Senegal and particularly by musicians like Baaba Maal, Youssou N'Dour and Salif Keita. He is equally at home on a small stage with just his voice and guitar or with a dance floor and a big fat 8-piece band with percussion and horns. His songs are original and written in English, French and his native Wolof. His band - Diwan – has a central core of Samba Sene (vox, gtr), Akin Fatumbi (bass gtr) and John Walsh (gtr, vox), with an evolving line-up of percussionists and brass players, including Dougie Hudson, Stuart Dinwoodie, Will Molleson, Nick McCallum and Doug Tiplady. Diwan play Mbalax fusion mixed with Afrobeats and jazzy grooves from Senegal; original songs with impassioned soaring vocals, infectious guitar licks and irresistible dancebeats. Add some sassy horns and a pinch of ska for world party music with soul. As well as regular live appearances, including a 3-week Edinburgh Fringe run at Edinburgh's premier jazz venue, the Jazz Bar, Samba organises (with Scary Biscuits) the monthly Ndaje:African Connections nights at Edinburgh's Bongo Club a good, muscular groove, with the bass rolling and tumbling below...
